Upgrading Java on the PowerFlex gateway and PowerFlex GUI presentation server

Upgrade Java to OpenJDK on the PowerFlex gateway and PowerFlex GUI presentation server.

Prerequisites

CAUTION: Skip this task if using PowerFlex Manager 3.7 or greater. In PowerFlex Manager 3.7, Java gets updated as part of the PowerFlex gateway upgrade using PowerFlex Manager.
  • In PowerFlex Manager 3.6 or prior, Java is updated manually by this task.

  • Download OpenJDK and its dependency packages from release repository.
  • Copy the downloaded files (JavaPackages.tar.gz and java-1.8.0-openjdkheadless-1.8.0.xxx.bxx-x.el7_9.x86_64.rpm) to /root/install on the PowerFlex gateway VM and PowerFlex GUI presentation server using WinSCP.
  • On the PowerFlex gateway and PowerFlex GUI presentation server VM, verify the version, type: # java -version.

Steps

  1. For the PowerFlex gateway, shut down the gateway service, type: # systemctl stop scaleio-gateway.
  2. Install or upgrade the OpenJDK dependencies on the PowerFlex gateway and PowerFlex GUI presentation server.
    1. Change directory to /root/install, type: # cd /root/install.
    2. List the dependencies, type: # ls
    3. Check for the copied OpenJDK dependency for javapackages.tar.gz.
    4. Decompress the file, type: # tar -zxf JavaPackages.tar.gz# tar -zxf JavaPackages.tar.gz.
    5. Install or upgrade OpenJDK dependency packages, type:
      #cd JavaPackages/
      #rpm -Uvh *.rpm
  3. Remove existing oracle java, by querying the java package information, type: # rpm -qa | grep -i jre.
  4. Capture the existing Java version and delete it, type: #rpm -e <java_version>.
  5. Install new OpenJDK, type: #rpm -ivh /root/install/java-1.8.0-openjdkheadless-1.8.0.xxx.bxx-x.el7_9.x86_64.rpm.
  6. Verify the version, type: # java -version.
The version is OpenJDK 64-bit server VM build 25.XXX-b09, mixed mode.
NOTE:The upgrade will automatically upgrade LockBox and restart the service.
  7. Validate the gateway service is running, type: # systemctl status scaleio-gateway.service.
  8. Validate the LockBox credentials, type:
    # cd /opt/emc/scaleio/gateway/bin
    # ./FOSGWTool.sh --query_esx_credentials
    Example of the command output:
    Default ESX credentials exist.
    Specific ESX credentials configuration:
    Ip: 192.168.100.1-192.168.100.20

  9. Validate the gateway is working:
    1. Log in to PowerFlex gateway GUI.
    2. Retrieve the system topology, enter the MDM details.
    3. Verify all PowerFlex clusters details are listed here.
