Dell PowerFlex Appliance with PowerFlex 3.x Administration Guide

PDF

Upgrade the PowerFlex Manager virtual appliance

Use the PowerFlex Manager version applicable to the Intelligent Catalog. If you must upgrade the PowerFlex Manager virtual appliance to the supported latest version, PowerFlex Manager has an integrated mechanism for upgrading the PowerFlex Manager virtual appliance from an older version to the latest version.

After you upgrade the virtual appliance, you may see services on older Intelligent Catalog (older than 12 months) go into lifecycle mode. This is expected as not all older Intelligent Catalog are qualified to be managed by all newer versions of PowerFlex Manager. These services may still be upgraded using this guide.

PowerFlex Manager 3.7 introduces compatibility management to provide valid upgrade paths for PowerFlex Manager virtual appliance and Intelligent Catalog.

NOTE:In PowerFlex Manager 3.7, the /var filesystem is increased to 180 GB from 100 GB. To expand the filesystem in PowerFlex Manager after the upgrade is complete, refer to https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000192061.

You can update the PowerFlex Manager virtual appliance from a local repository path

NOTE:The PowerFlex gateway root file system may over-fill, due to large Localhost_access.log files. To prevent this, refer to https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/541865.

If you are running version 3.1 of the PowerFlex Manager virtual appliance, you must increase the CPU, memory, and disk space resources for the VM before upgrading the virtual appliance. The upgrade requires 8 virtual CPUs, 32 GB of memory, and 200 GB of hard disk space.

To expand the CPU, memory, and disk space for the VM:

  1. Power off the PowerFlex Manager VM.
  2. Right-click the VM in VMware vCenter.
  3. Choose Edit Settings.
  4. Adjust the settings for the CPU, memory, and disk space.

You cannot change the disk space setting if you have any snapshots of the virtual appliance. You must delete the snapshots before changing the disk space setting.

  5. Increase the available disk space in the PowerFlex Manager virtual appliance.
