Upgrade from non-OS10 operating system to OS10 using ONIE

Use this procedure to upgrade from an non-OS10 operating system.

Prerequisites

This task is used for upgrading the switch to OS10 if:
  • The switch is running Dell Networking OS9, and the desire is to update to OS10.
  • The switch is running a non-Dell operating system, and the desire is to update to OS10.
NOTE:This task is not recommended for updating a switch from one version of OS10 to another version of OS10 since it erases any existing configuration.

Steps

  1. Reload the switch (if OS9 is loaded, use the reload command), and press the ESC key before the counter reaches zero.

  2. Use the down arrow key to select ONIE and press ENTER.
  3. An ONIE-enabled device boots with preloaded diagnostics and ONIE software and displays the following menu:

    Only the ONIE: Uninstall OS and the ONIE: Install OS selections are used in this upgrade example. Table below describes the actions for each menu option.

    • Boots to the ONIE prompt
    • Installs an OS10 image using the automatic discovery process
    • Deletes previously installed image and configuration

    ONIE: Rescue
    • Boots to the ONIE prompt
    • Allows for manual installation of an OS10 image
    • Allows for updating ONIE
    • Useful for running diagnostics manually
    ONIE: Uninstall OS
    • Does not delete ONIE or diagnostics
    • Deletes configuration
    • Erases any installed operating system
    • Restores to factory defaults
    ONIE: Update ONIE
    • Updates to a new ONIE version
    • Used for downloading and updating ONIE from a URL
    • Used for updating ONIE image using the automatic discovery process
    ONIE: Embed ONIE
    • Formats an empty disk and installs ONIE
    • Erases any installed operating system
    ONIE: Diag ONIE
    • Runs system diagnostics
