Set the vNUMA advanced option

Use this task to set the SVM numa.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode value to half the vCPUs assigned to the SVM.

About this task

For example, if the SVM for an MG pool has 20 vCPUs, set numa.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode=10. If the SVM for an FG pool has 24 vCPUs, set numa.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode = 12.

Prerequisites

Ensure that the CPU hot plug is disabled. Do the following to disable the CPU hot plug feature before configuring vNUMA parameter:

  1. Log in to the VMware vCenter vSphere client.
  2. Right-click the VM that you want to change and select Edit Settings.
  3. Under the Virtual Hardware tab, expand CPU and verify that the CPU Hot Plug option is cleared.

Steps

  1. Go to the SVM in the VMware vSphere client.
  2. Select a data center, folder, cluster, resource pool, or host to find a VM.
  3. Click the VMs tab.
  4. Right-click the VM and select Edit Settings.
  5. Click VM Options and expand Advanced.
  6. Under Configuration Parameters, click Edit Configuration.
  7. In the dialog box that appears, click Add Configuration Params to enter a new parameter name and its value.
For example, if the SVM for an MG pool has 20 vCPUs, set numa.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode = 10. If the SVM for an FG pool has 24 vCPUs, set numa.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode = 12.
  8. Click OK twice.
    Ensure the following:
    • Under CPU, Shares are set to High.
    • 50% of the vCPUs is reserved on the SVM. For example, if the SVM for an MG pool is configured with 20 vCPUs and CPU speed is 2.8 GHz, set a reservation of 28 GHz (20x2.8/2). If the SVM for an FG pool is configured with 24 vCPUs and CPU speed is 3 GHz, set a reservation of 36 GHz (24x3/2).
  9. Right-click the VM you want to change and select Edit Settings.
  10. Under the Virtual Hardware tab, expand CPU, verify Reservation and Shares as mentioned.
