File sharing services

NFS, CIFS, and HTTPD all use the same share or document root: /shares.  This is a Logical Volume Manager (LVM) volume that is mounted as a separate disk device. FTP is restricted to user accounts, and the administrator has the shares directory as a bind mount underneath the users home directory.  Main features of the file sharing services are:

  • FTP uses the user account password in order to access.
  • CIFS relies on a separate smbpassword db.
  • NFS and HTTP are not secured by a password .
  • TFTP UDP-based and not secure. The other end must allow for UDP packets on port 69 in order to retrieve any files.
