Deleting users

The choice of deletion method depends on if you are deleting the user and user files or the user account only.

Steps

  1. SSH to the server and log in as root.
  2. In the command prompt, choose either of the following:
If you want to delete the user type the following:
without deleting any of their files userdel username
home directory along with the user account itself userdel -r username
NOTE:Add sudo ahead of the command if you are signed in as a nonroot user with sudo privileges.

With either command, the user is automatically removed from any groups that they were added to. This includes the wheel group if they were given sudo privileges. If you later add another user with the same name, they have to be added to the wheel group again to gain sudo access.
