Dell EMC PowerEdge R7425 Installation and Service Manual

Installing a GPU

Prerequisites

  1. Follow the safety guidelines listed in Safety instructions.
  2. Remove the air shroud.
  3. Remove the heat sink.
  4. Remove the standard cooling fans and replace them with high performance cooling fans.
  5. Unpack the GPU cards and the GPU kit.
  6. Install the heat sink from the kit.
  7. Install the risers.
  8. Install the GPU air shroud on the system.

This image shows installing the GPU air shroud.
  9. Press the blue tabs on either sides of the air shroud and remove the top cover of the air shroud.
Figure 2. Removing the top cover of the air shroud
This image shows removing the top cover of the air shroud.
  10. If applicable, remove the shroud filler from the GPU air shroud slots.
NOTE Shroud fillers are available in the GPU air shroud for GPU installed on riser 2 and 3.
Figure 3. Removing the shroud filler from GPU air shroud slots
This image shows removing the shroud filler from the GPU air shroud.
NOTE Shroud fillers are available in the GPU air shroud for GPU installed only on risers 2 and 3.
NOTE Ensure that the PCIe card holder latches on GPU air shroud and risers are closed before installing the GPU. Full-length GPU do not require the PCIe card holder latch on the risers to secure the GPU in place.
NOTE Ensure that you install the first GPU on riser 1.
NOTE While installing a GPU on riser 3, place the GPU on the system with the GPU label side facing up.

Steps

  1. Connect the GPU power cable to the connector on the system board.
NOTE While installing a GPU on riser 1, connect the GPU power cable to the connector on riser 1 and route the cable through the slot on the GPU air shroud.
NOTE While installing a GPU on risers 2 or riser 3, connect the GPU power cable to the connector on the system board.
  2. Connect the other end of the GPU power cable to the GPU.
  3. Lift the expansion card latch and remove the filler bracket.
NOTE You must install a filler bracket over an empty expansion card slot to maintain Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification of the system. The brackets also keep dust and dirt out of the system and aid in proper cooling and airflow inside the system.
NOTE The filler bracket is necessary to maintain proper thermal conditions.
  4. Align the connector on the GPU with the connector on the riser.
  5. Insert the GPU into the riser until it is fully seated.
  6. Press the PCIe lock on the GPU air shroud to release the PCIe card holder latch.
NOTE Ensure that the GPU edges are seated properly in the GPU air shroud slot and PCIe card holder latch.
NOTE Full-length GPU do not require the PCIe card holder latch on the risers to secure the GPU in place.
  7. Close the expansion card latch.

Next steps

  1. Install the top cover of the GPU air shroud.

If available, remove the plastic cover fixed on the memory socket numbers marked on the air shroud.

  2. To install mylar foam on the system cover:
    1. Place the system cover with the Service Information Label (SIL) side facing up.
    2. For easier handling, peel off a small section of the adhesive cover and align the mylar foam with the system cover.
    3. Remove rest of the adhesive cover and install mylar foam on the system cover.
    4. Press along the length of the mylar foam to ensure that it is rmly affixed to the system cover.
