Dell PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance 5.12.0.1 Cloud Disaster Recovery User Guide

Overview

This guide provides information about how to deploy and configure Cloud DR (Service) in PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance to back up and run disaster recovery (DR) of virtual machines.

Cloud Disaster Recovery (Service) is integrated into Cloud DR. Cloud DR (Service) supports PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance as an on-premises backup source. This feature enables users to protect VMs by uploading VM image backups to the public cloud object storage, and run automated DR operations on those copies. This feature provides DR orchestration capabilities also. The requirement of an offsite data center is eliminated as the users can add the cloud as another cost-effective DR site using Cloud DR (Service). From the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI, you can configure Cloud DR to move backups to the cloud, and perform disaster recovery of these backups. Cloud DR (Service) in PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance supports Amazon Web Services (AWS), AWS GovCloud, Microsoft Azure, and Microsoft Azure Government.

Cloud DR (Service) users can configure proxy settings in the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI for communication between on premises source and public cloud. Both AWS and Azure support proxy configuration.

Examples of Cloud DR (Service) workflow include the following:

  • Cloud DR (Service) site copy management — Set the Cloud DR (Service) site by creating a VM protection policy in the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI.
  • VM copy failover validation — Before a disaster occurs, you can validate the failover of a VM copy to the cloud within PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance.
NOTE Only compliant VMs deemed by Cloud Provider can do a DR-Test to be converted to run in Cloud.
  • Fail over for Production-Compliant VM only — Fail over a production virtual machine within PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance by running a DR failover operation and then verifying that the restored VM appears within Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure.
  • Restore a production VM — Restore virtual machines from copies that are stored in the cloud account (Amazon Web Services, or Microsoft Azure). The restore process requires a vCenter Staging area set up before failback from Cloud to on-premises vCenter. Restore operations are performed on one virtual machine at a time. You must manually select the target vCenter server.
