Dell PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance 5.14.0.0 Administrator Guide for DM5500

Storage encryption algorithm

An encryption algorithm is the method that is used to encrypt data. The algorithm uses an encryption key to secure the data.

The default AES 256-bit Cipher Block Chaining(CBC). The other available algorithms are:

  • AES 256-bit Galois/Counter Mode(GCM)
  • AES 128-bit Galois/Counter Mode(GCM)
  • AES 128-bit Cipher Block Chaining(CBC)

AES 256-bit Galois/Counter Mode(GCM) is the most secure algorithm, but it is slower than CBC.

You can encrypt the existing data using the selected algorithm during the first cleaning cycle after the file system is restarted. Encryption of existing data can take longer than a standard file system cleaning operation.
