Dell PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance 5.14.0.0 Administrator Guide for DM5500

PowerProtect Data Manager ApplianceCloud Disaster Recovery

The Cloud Disaster Recovery (DR) feature enables you to use a Cloud DR (Service) site by deploying the Cloud DR (Service) Server in the public cloud. You can use the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI for running VM protection and DR workflows in the cloud.

Cloud DR (Service) component is recovered as part of the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance VM recovery.

Cloud DR (Service) in PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance supports Amazon Web Services (AWS), AWS GovCloud, Microsoft Azure, and Microsoft Azure Government.

Examples of Cloud DR (Service) workflow include the following:

  • Cloud DR (Service) site copy management — Set the Cloud DR (Service) site by creating a VM protection policy in the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI.
  • VM copy failover validation — Before a disaster occurs, you can validate the failover of a VM copy to the cloud within PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance.
NOTE:Only compliant VMs deemed by Cloud Provider can do a DR-Test to be converted to run in Cloud.
  • Fail over for Production-Compliant VM only — Fail over a production virtual machine within PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance by running a DR failover operation and then verifying that the restored VM appears within Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure cloud.
  • Restore a production VM — Restore virtual machines from copies that are stored in the cloud account (Amazon Web Services, or Microsoft Azure). The restore process requires a vCenter Staging area set up before failback from Cloud to on-premises vCenter. Restore operations are performed on one virtual machine at a time. You must manually select the target vCenter server.
