PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance 5.16.0.0 Administrator's Guide for DM5500

Expand Physical Storage Capacity

You can purchase an additional license or additional disk storage to expand the capacity to a maximum of 256 TB. This procedure is only required if the DM5500 you originally purchased was licensed with 24 TB or less of usable capacity and you want to expand storage capacity.

Prerequisites

  • Before you upload the license, add all the drives physically.
  • Add the hard drive drives in physical slots 14 to 23, plus the SSD cache disk in physical slot 3.
  • Populate the drive in a bottom to top order to avoid the metal stops from bending in the drive cage in the drive bays.
CAUTION:The drives specified in the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI do not contain the physical slot number of the drive, but the logical slot number of the drive. Physical drive positions are numbered 0 through 23 in the DM5500 server. Logical drive positions are numbered 1 through 24. For example, the SSD cache disk drive that resides in physical slot 3 in the DM5500 server is specified as Disk=4 in the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI.
NOTE: It may take up to 5 minutes for a disk to appear in the Data Manager Appliance UI after it is inserted into the drive slot. To install the drives physically:
  1. To insert the 10 additional storage drives into the appliance, you must open the DM5500 drive bay to access the expansion drive slots in drive bay 2.

In drive bay 2, physical slots are numbered 12 to 23, and there is an imprint at the bottom of the bay denoting the slot number.

  2. Remove the blank from the drive slot.
  3. Press the release button on the front of the drive carrier to open the release handle.
  4. Insert and slide the drive carrier into the drive slot.
  5. Close the drive carrier release handle until it clicks in place.
  6. Close the drive bays.
  7. Insert the SSD cache disk in physical slot 3 of drive bay 1.
  8. In the Data Manager Appliance UI, go to the Infrastructure > Storage > Disks tab and verify that the newly added HDDs are now present and in the Unknown state.
