PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance 5.15.0.0 Release Notes for DM5500

New features and enhancements

The following features are introduced in this release.

Table 1. New features in Data Manager Appliance Software 5.15.0.0 New Data Manager Appliance Software features
Functional area Feature description Summary of benefits
Storage PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance supports the addition of up to three expansion enclosures. Each 2U expansion enclosure contains 12 8 TB drives installed in a four ‐columns, three-row configuration. The expansion enclosures connect directly to the SAS ports on the back of the DM5500 server. The maximum storage capacity for a DM5500 appliance configuration with three expansion enclosures is 256 TB. In previous releases, the maximum storage capacity without expansion enclosures was 96 TB.
Installation configuration iDRAC network settings are now configured in the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI as part of the initial installation configuration setup. Using the iDRAC UI as a separate interface to configure iDRAC settings is no longer required. iDRAC network configuration is integrated into the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI.
PowerStore integration PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance integrates PowerStore storage to protect block volumes and volume groups directly. This feature enables you to protect and restore block volume data on storage arrays by creating storage snapshots and backups to protection storage.
Logging You can now export and download log bundles when PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance is in maintenance mode. From the UI, select Settings > Support > Logs as you would when the server is in full operational mode. This feature enables you to export and download log bundles in maintenance mode.
Logging Viewing the details of an audit-log entry shows a Source value that corresponds to the component that generated the log entry. This feature provides additional details for audit-log entries.
Storage The retention lock set on a storage system can be overridden for individual backup copies. Overriding retention locking allows a backup copy to have its retention period that is reduced or deleted before its expiration date. This feature allows a backup copy to have its retention period reduced or deleted before its expiration date.
Security settings Bi-directional ports between Reporting and Data Domain are now open to avoid failure of server DR backup. This feature helps server DR backups to occur properly.
Authorization PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance introduces the Global Replication Setting option that enables you to select the most secure replication encryption. Enabling this option simplifies the overall solution configuration and maintenance. It increases the overall replication security as the most secure option is selected.
Security An additional security officer role authorization is required for NTP changes in the appliance while submitting system configuration. This feature helps to retain the security measures of the system.
Security PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance supports enabling an external key manager. This feature enables you to configure your own certificate authority.
Protection You can now replicate both server metadata and user data to external DD appliances running on-premises or in the cloud, significantly reducing operational costs. This feature allows you to replicate server metadata and user data to external DD appliances.
Protection You can perform centralized restores of SAP HANA data from the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI when the data has been backed up through a protection policy. SAP HANA restores apply to both stand-alone and multinode database environments. Databases can be restored to their original location, to a new database on the original host, or to a new database on an alternate host. For more information, see the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance SAP HANA User Guide. You can restore the database to a recent state, a specific point in time or a specific full backup.
Backup The NAS agent creates slices of the NAS share for backing up a folder that contains a huge number of files (more than one million). Eight slices are backed up in a single session and the maximum allowable sessions for each NAS proxy is three.

The slicing agent within the NAS agent crawls and creates metadata of the files and shares. During the backup process, the backup agent uses this metadata to backup the files rather than initiating the second crawl process to read the files in the folder.

For more information, see the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance Network Attached Storage User Guide
The slicing and chunking of files within the NAS shares reduces the overall backup time and allows backup of high-density folders. Also dynamic slicing allows the user to backup assets that are smaller than 5 TB, and contains huge number of small-sized files.
Protection The Microsoft application agent supports the MetaCache Database (MCDB) feature in Microsoft Exchange Server 2019. You can now perform the following protection operations for Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 databases when the MCDB option is enabled:
  • Centralized backups.
  • Self-service backups and restores.
  • Granular-level restores using ItemPoint.
This feature enables you to perform the following protection operations:
  • Centralized backups
  • Self-service backups and restores
  • Granular-level restores using ItemPoint
Protection PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance supports the Oracle backups and restores in a high-availability Oracle RAC One Node or active/passive system on AIX and Linux. The Oracle active/passive RAC system includes one active node where the database runs and multiple passive nodes in the cluster. PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance also supports the protection of an Oracle active/passive RAC system with Oracle Data Guard configurations or Oracle Incremental Merge operations. This feature allows you to dynamically protect an Active node at any point in time.
Protection In an Oracle RAC environment, PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance supports the Oracle multistream parallel backups as either Application Direct centralized backups or Oracle Incremental Merge centralized or selfservice backups. The parallel backups can run on either all nodes or selected nodes in the RAC environment, based on the configuration. You can set the cluster backup nodes to be used for the backups through an asset-level option in the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI. This enhancement improves performance.
Protection The File System agent provides the ability to select the backup mechanism used by a particular protection policy. This feature enables you to select the backup mechanism used by protection policies.
ZFS support The File System agent supports the ZFS file system in Redhat Enterprise Linux operating systems. Support for the ZFS file system.
Public REST API PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance introduces the public REST API to manage the appliance using custom scripts and automation. You can use the REST API to perform the supported operations.
Language support The File System agent adds protection of data hosted on Korean operating systems. This feature enables you to protect data hosted on Korean operating systems.
User Interface PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance now supports the latest version of Microsoft Edge when viewing the Dashboard. You can now use Microsoft Edge to view the Dashboard.
