Drives

Most drives in the DM5500 are hot-swappable. The only drives that are not hot-swappable are the four drives in slots 0, 1, 4, and 5. You cannot replace the drives in those four slots without the assistance of Dell support. You can replace all the other drives (the drives in slots 2, 3, and 6 through 23); these drives are hot-swappable. Drives are supplied in drive carriers that fit in the drive slots. You do not need to shut down the DM5500 to replace a hot-swappable drive. You can pull out the front drive bay to access the drives in the mid-drive bay without having to remove the DM5500 from the rack.

NOTE:The non hot-swappable disks in slots 0, 1, 4, and 5 display as disks 1.1, 1.2, 1.5, and 1.6 in the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance UI.

Up to four drives in the DM5500 can fail without data loss occurring. More specifically, up to two drives in slots 0 through 13 can fail and up to two drives in slots 14 through 23 can fail without data loss occurring.

NOTE:The exception is that data loss could potentially occur in the unlikely event that there is a dual drive failure in both slots 0 and 1 or in both slots 4 and 5.)

You cannot perform the following drive replacement scenarios; Dell support must be engaged to perform these drive replacements:

  • One or both drives in slots 0 and 1 fail.
  • One or both drives in slots 4 and 5 fail.
  • More than two drives in slots 0 through13 fail.
  • More than two drives in slots 14 through 23 fail.
CAUTION:When replacing a drive in the DM5500, it is important to perform the procedure within 5 minutes. Drive bays should not be in service position for more than 5 minutes because of thermal concerns. When the drive bay is open for more than five minutes, the cooling fans spin at a higher speed to provide extra cooling to the system. Thus, system health status changes from the normal to critical state, and the system event "The BP1 drive bay is kept open for an extended period of time" is logged.
