Installing the system board

CAUTION:The information in this installation section is intended for authorized service technicians only.

Prerequisites

If you are replacing a component, remove the existing component before performing the installation procedure.

About this task

NOTE:The Service Tag of your computer is stored in the system board. You must enter the Service Tag in the BIOS setup program after you replace the system board.
NOTE:Replacing the system board removes any changes that you have made to the BIOS using the BIOS setup program. You must make the appropriate changes again after you replace the system board.

The following image indicates the connectors on your system board.

  1. Power-supply unit cable connector (ATX CPU1)
  2. Power-supply unit cable connector (ATX CPU2)
  3. Memory module connectors (DIMM3, DIMM1, DIMM4, DIMM2)

  5. Media-card reader connector (SD CARD)
  6. M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive connector (M.2 PCIe SSD-1)

The following images indicate the location of the system board and provide a visual representation of the installation procedure.

Steps

  1. Slide the front I/O-ports on the system board into the front I/O-slots on the chassis and align the screw holes on the system board with the screw holes on the chassis.
  2. Replace the two M.2 solid-state drive standoff nuts (M2) to secure the system board to the chassis.
  3. Replace the seven screws (#6-32) to secure the system board to the chassis.

  4. Connect the following cables to the respective connectors on the system board and route them through the retention clips on the chassis, if applicable:
    1. Power-supply unit cables (ATX CPU1, ATX CPU2 and ATX SYS)
    2. Slim optical drive cable (SATA3)
    3. Hard drive cables (SATA0 and SATA PWR)
    4. Internal-speaker cable (INT SPKR)
    5. Intrusion-switch cable (INTRUSION)

  5. Close the PCIe door and press it gently until it clicks in place on the chassis.
  6. Align the tabs on the front I/O-bracket with the slots on the chassis.
  7. Replace the screw (#6-32) to secure the front I/O-bracket to the chassis.

Next steps

  1. Install the optional I/O modules, if applicable.
  2. Install the voltage-regulator heat sink.
  3. Install the processor.
  4. Install the system fan.
  5. Install the processor fan and heat-sink assembly (for 65 W processors) or the processor fan and heat-sink assembly (for 125 W processors), whichever is applicable.
  6. Install the external SMA antenna module, if applicable.
  7. Install the power button.
  8. Install the expansion card, if applicable.
  9. Install the 3.5-inch hard drive or the secondary 3.5-inch hard drive, whichever is applicable.
  10. Install the media-card reader, if applicable.
  11. Install the graphics card or the powered graphics card, whichever is applicable.
  12. Install the wireless card.
  13. Install the external puck antenna, if applicable.
  14. Install the M.2 2230 solid-state drive or the M.2 2280 solid-state drive, whichever is applicable.
  15. Install the memory module.
  16. Install the front bezel.
  17. Install the side cover.
  18. Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer.
