Dell NetWorker 19.9 Administration Guide

Migrating and importing the server

NetWorker 19.9 and later enables you to import the media database and the clients from a server and migrate them to another server by using the nsrmmdbasm, nsrimportmmdb, and nsrimportclient commands. These commands are independent of each other. If you are importing the media database and the clients, first import the media database because the media database contains the client ID mappings, which map client reference numbers to client names.

  1. Back up the source machine's media database by running the following command on the source server:
    nsrmmdbasm -s <media_database_path_on_the_source_server> mmdb.xdr
mmdb.xdr is the name of the output file, which contains a copy of the media database.
  2. Import the media database.
    nsrimportmmdb -w -s <source_server> -d <destination_server> < mmdb.xdr
mmdb.xdr is the media database file that is backed up in step 1.
  3. mport the clients.
    nsrmportclient -w -s <source_server> -d <destination_server> '*'
    '*' represents all clients.

Limitations of Server Migrate or Import

  • At this time indexes are not imported. As a result the following limitations need to be considered:
    • Browsable recovers cannot be done with imported data. Saveset recovery is supported.
    • Incremental backups will be promoted to full on their following backups.
  • Bootstraps are not imported. This is to prevent potential confusion in future bootstrap backups, and due to the fact that bootstraps are server specific, and not needed on the new server.
  • The imported server should not share access to the same device of any other server. If done, any backup from one server will be erased by the other, as servers view backups that aren't in their specific database as an item to delete.
