MAXRC

The MAXRC parameter specifies the maximum allowable return codes. If the code that a command returns, exceeds the MAXRC value, all following commands are bypassed.

Each message that is issued has a severity that is associated with it. Severities are associated with the last character of the message ID. For instance, if the last character is 'I', the severity is 0. 'W' is 4 and 'E' is 8.

When command processing is complete, the highest severity for a message that is issued for the command is checked against the MAXRC setting to determine whether additional commands are processed.

MAXRC does not apply until after the parsing phase is complete. If any error is encountered during the parsing phase, the run is always terminated.

For example:

  • Message ESNPxxxI—Severity is 0. With MAXRC(4), additional commands are processed (0 is not greater than 4).
  • Message ESNPxxxW—Severity is 4. With MAXRC(4), additional commands are processed (4 is not greater than 4).
  • Message ESNPxxxE—Severity is 8. With MAXRC(4), additional commands are not processed (8 is greater than 4).

The MAXRC parameter can be specified on the GLOBAL command.
