Removing the heat sink

  1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer .
  2. Remove the:
    1. battery

    2. base cover

    3. optional GPU module

  3. To remove the heat sink:
    1. Loosen the screws that secure the heat sink to the system board [1, 2, 3, 4].
      • NOTE: Loosen the screws in the order of the callout numbers [1, 2, 3, 4]. These screws are retention screws and cannot be fully removed.
    2. Lift and remove the heat sink from the computer [5].
    This figure shows how to remove the heat sink.
  4. Clean the old thermal grease and apply a replacement thermal pad (if available).
