Removing the system board

CAUTION:The information in this removal section is intended for authorized service technicians only.

Prerequisites

  1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
  2. Remove the nanoSIM card.
  3. Remove the base cover.
  4. Remove the battery.
  5. Remove the memory modules.
  6. Remove the M.2 2230 solid-state drive.
  7. Remove the wireless card.
  8. Remove the WWAN card.
  9. Remove the coin-cell battery.
  10. Remove the fan.
  11. Remove the heat sink.
  12. Remove the assembly inner frame.

  1. Fingerprint-reader cable connector (JFPBTN1)
  2. Display cable connector (JEDP1)
  3. WWAN card slot (WWAN)
  4. Camera/IR cable connector (JIR1)
  5. Solid-state drive slot (SSD)
  6. Wireless card slot (WLAN)
  7. Memory modules (DIMM A/DIMM B)
  8. Fan cable connector (JFAN1)
  9. Touchpad cable connector (JITP1)
  10. USH cable connector (JUSH1)

Steps

  1. Remove the screw (M2x3) that secures the fingerprint reader bracket to the palm-rest assembly.
  2. Lift the fingerprint reader bracket off the palm-rest assembly.
  3. Disconnect the fingerprint reader cable from the connector (JFPBTN1) on the system board.
  4. Remove the two screws (M2x3) that secure the display cable bracket to the palm-rest assembly.
  5. Lift the display cable bracket off the palm-rest assembly.
  6. Disconnect the display cable from the connector (JEDP1) on the system board.
  7. Disconnect the camera/IR cable from the connector (JIR1) on the system board.
  8. Remove the camera/IR cable from the routing guide on the system board.
  9. Open the latch and disconnect the USH cable from the connector (JUSH1) on the system board.
  10. Open the latch and disconnect the touchpad cable from the connector (JITP1) on the system board.
  11. Remove the three screws (M2x5) that secure the USB Type-C bracket to the palm-rest assembly.
  12. Remove the three screws (M2x4) that secure the system board to the palm-rest assembly.
  13. Lift the system board off the palm-rest assembly.
    NOTE:For computers shipped with a 5G WWAN card, the WWAN card thermal pad must be transferred to the replacement system board.

    NOTE: The system board includes a USB Type-C bracket, which must NOT be removed.
    NOTE:For computers shipped with a U15 system board, the system board includes a power shielding cover, which must NOT be removed.
