Installing the system board

CAUTION:The information in this section is intended for authorized service technicians only.

Prerequisites

If you are replacing a component, remove the existing component before performing the installation process.

NOTE: For computers shipped with a 4G WWAN card, the WWAN card support frame MUST be transferred to the replacement system board.
NOTE:For models shipped with a 5G WWAN card, the WWAN card thermal pad MUST be transferred to the replacement system board.
NOTE: The system board includes a USB Type-C bracket which must NOT be removed.
NOTE:

For models shipped with a U15 system board, the system board includes two power shielding covers which must NOT be removed.

Steps

  1. Slide the system board at an angle into the palm-rest assembly and align the screw holes that secure the system board to the palm-rest assembly.
  2. Replace the three screws (M2x4) that secure the system board to the palm-rest assembly.
  3. Align the screw holes on the USB Type-C bracket with the screw holes on the palm-rest assembly.
  4. Replace the three screws (M2x5) that secure the USB Type-C bracket to the palm-rest assembly.
  5. Connect the USH cable to the connector on the system board and close the latch to secure the cable.
  6. Connect the touchpad cable to the connector on the touchpad module and close the latch to secure the cable.
  7. Align the screw hole on the display cable bracket with the screw hole on the palm-rest assembly.
  8. Replace the two screws (M2x3) that secure the display cable bracket to the palm-rest assembly.
  9. Align the screw hole on the fingerprint reader bracket with the screw hole on the palm-rest assembly.
  10. Replace the screw (M2x3) that secures the fingerprint reader bracket to the palm-rest assembly.
  11. Align the screw hole on the WWAN card support frame with the screw hole on the palm-rest assembly.
  12. Replace the screw (M2x3) that secures the WWAN card support frame to the palm-rest assembly.

  1. Install the assembly inner frame.
  2. Install the heat sink.
  3. Install the fan.
  4. Install the WWAN card.
  5. Install the wireless card.
  6. Install the M.2 2230 solid-state drive.
  7. Install the memory module.
  8. Install the battery.
  9. Install the base cover.
  10. Install the SIM card tray.
  11. Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer.
