Dell InsightIQ 4.3.0.0 Administration Guide

Datastore Requirements

InsightIQ collects data and stores that information in the datastore. The datastore can be stored on a local virtual machine, on a OneFS cluster, or on other NFS servers.

Local Datastore Requirements

If InsightIQ is installed on a virtual machine, the datastore is stored locally on a virtual drive. If InsightIQ is installed on a Linux system, the datastore is stored locally on a drive.

If the datastore is being stored locally, the drive must meet the following requirements:

  • The datastore location must have a minimum amount of free disk space. It is recommended to have 70 GB at install.
NOTE: For more information about calculating the minimum GB for your datastore, see the Additional Information about Datastore Disk Space section.
  • The datastore location cannot contain an existing InsightIQ datastore.

OneFS Datastore Requirements

If InsightIQ is installed on a Dell PowerScale or Isilon cluster, the cluster must meet the following requirements:

  • The datastore location must have a minimum amount of free disk space. It is recommended to have 256 GB at install.
NOTE: For more information about calculating the minimum GB for your datastore, see the Additional Information about Datastore Disk Space section.
  • The datastore location cannot contain an existing InsightIQ datastore.
  • The InsightIQ version and the OneFS version must be compatible.
  • Verify that the cluster includes a correctly configured NFS export rule.
NOTE: The export rule must export the datastore path, and map the root user on the InsightIQ server to the user account that owns the export on the OneFS server.
  • Enable read and write access to the export. This configuration allows InsightIQ to mount the server and create the necessary directories and files on the server.
NOTE: OneFS ships with a default NFS export rule for the /ifs directory that you can use for InsightIQ. If that default NFS export has been modified or deleted, create an NFS export rule that allows write access for InsightIQ.
  • If you want to connect over IPv6, confirm that the IPv6 addresses are configured for both InsightIQ and the OneFS server.
  • Do not place the datastore in a path included in a snapshot.
  • Do not place the datastore in a path included in a Smartquota.

Other NFS Datastore Requirements

If InsightIQ is installed on a different NFS-based server, the server must meet the following requirements:

  • The datastore location must have a minimum amount of free disk space. It is recommended to have 256 GB at install.
NOTE: For more information about calculating the minimum GB for your datastore, see the Additional Information about Datastore Disk Space section.
  • The datastore location cannot contain an existing InsightIQ datastore.
  • Verify that the server includes a correctly configured NFS export rule.
NOTE: The export rule must export the datastore path, and map the root user on the InsightIQ server to the user account that owns the export on the NFS server.
  • Enable read and write access to the export. This configuration allows InsightIQ to mount the server and create the necessary directories and files on the server.
  • The NFS server must be on the same subnet and have good network connectivity.
  • If you want to connect over IPv6, confirm that the IPv6 addresses are configured for both InsightIQ and the NFS server.

Additional Information about Datastore Disk Space

The InsightIQ datastore increases in size as the monitored cluster grows and the time-monitored increases. It is recommended that you increase the size of the InsightIQ datastore by 2 GB per node for each month of retained data.

Use the following equation to calculate the minimum size of your specific datastore:

<minimum_datastore_size_in_GB> = 2*<number_of_nodes>*<number_of_months> + 10
NOTE: There is no maximum size for an InsightIQ datastore. The size of the datastore should not affect performance.
NOTE: The +10 is to allow InsightIQ space to monitor the cluster. If InsightIQ is unable to free at least 5 GB of datastore disk space, InsightIQ stops monitoring the cluster. If the datastore runs out of disk space, see the operating system or VMware documentation for how to increase disk space for the datastore.
