Installing the system board

CAUTION:The information in this section is intended for authorized service technicians only.

Prerequisites

If you are replacing a component, remove the existing component before performing the installation process.

About this task

NOTE:The Service Tag information of your computer is stored in the system board. You must enter the Service Tag in the BIOS setup program after you replace the system board.
NOTE:Replacing the system board removes any changes that you have made to the BIOS using the BIOS setup program. You must make the appropriate changes again after you replace the system board.
NOTE:Before disconnecting the cables from the system board, note the location of the connectors so that you can reconnect the cables correctly after you replace the system board.

Removing the system board

  1. Processor-power cable connector (ATX CPU1)
  2. Processor socket
  3. Processor-power cable connector (ATX CPU2)
  4. Processor-fan cable connector
  5. Memory module slots
  6. M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive slot
  7. Power-button cable connector
  8. Media-card reader cable connector
  9. System-board power cable connector (ATX SYS)
  10. M.2 wireless-card slot
  11. Optical-drive data cable connector (SATA-3)
  12. Hard-drive and optical-drive power cable connector (SATA PWR)
  13. Hard-drive data cable connector (SATA-0, boot drive)
  14. PCIe x16 slot (SLOT2)
  15. PCIe x1 slot (SLOT1)
  16. Coin-cell battery socket

Steps

  1. Slide the system board at an angle with the rear external ports aligned to their respective openings at the rear of the chassis.
  2. Place the system board onto the chassis.
  3. Replace the seven screws (#6-32) and the screw (#6-32x3.8) to secure the system board on the chassis.
  4. Route and connect the following cables to the system board.
    • hard-drive and optical-drive power cable
    • optical-drive data cable
    • hard-drive data cable
    • system-board power cable
    • power-button cable
    • processor-power cable
  5. Align and place the front I/O bracket with I/O slot on the chassis.
  6. Replace the screw (#6-32) to secure the front I/O bracket on the chassis.

Next steps

  1. Install the processor.
  2. Install the fan and heat-sink assembly.
  3. Install the fan shroud.
  4. Install the media-card reader.
  5. Install the coin-cell battery.
  6. Install the wireless card.
  7. Install the M.2 2230 solid-state drive or M.2 2280 solid-state drive, as applicable.
  8. Install the memory.
  9. Install the hard-drive and optical-drive cage.
  10. Install the 3.5-inch hard drive or 2.5-inch hard drive.
  11. Install the front cover.
  12. Install the left-side cover.
  13. Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer.
