Removing the base cover

Prerequisites

  1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.

About this task

NOTE: Before removing the base cover, ensure that there is no SD card installed in the SD card slot on your computer.

The following images indicate the location of the base cover and provide a visual representation of the removal procedure.

Remove the four screws (M2x5) and loosen the four captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly

Pry open the base cover starting from the gaps located at the top left and right corners of the base cover

Remove the screw (M1.6x3.4) Torx (T5) securing the battery cable in place

NOTE: Inspiron 14 3420 leverages the same battery from Latitude 7320 Detachable. The battery switch printing on the battery is NOT applicable to Inspiron 14 3420. There is NO battery switch on Inspiron 14 3420.

Steps

  1. Remove the four screws (M2x5) that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
  2. Loosen the four captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
  3. Using your fingers, pry open the base cover starting from the gaps at the upper left and right corners of the base cover.
  4. Lift the base cover off the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
  5. Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to drain the flea power.
  6. Remove the screw (M1.6x3.4, Torx T5) securing the battery cable in place.
  7. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board.
  8. Remove the interposer board from the system.
    CAUTION: Technicians have to remove the interposer board immediately after disconnecting the battery cable to prevent the board from falling out of the system.
    CAUTION: The pins on the interposer board are fragile. Avoid contact with pins on the board, instead handle the board by lifting and holding from the edges or the sides.
