Dell PowerProtect DD Management Center (DDMC) 7.9 Installation and Administration Guide

Deploy Smart Scale services

The DDMC Smart Scale feature is not available by default. Smart Scale services must be deployed.

Prerequisites

  • A data center must exist.
  • DNS configuration is a requirement for deployment. Configure one or more valid DNS servers on the DDMC.
  • Observe the Smart Scale requirements described in the Dell PowerProtect DD Management Center Installation and Administration Guide ("Updating DDMC software" topic).
  • If you are using:
    • A different port than the default port that the DD Namespace Redirection Service (DDNRS) uses, see DDNRS ports.
    • Different ports for the DDMC to communicate with services on the DD Namespace VM (DDNVM), see DDNVM ports. These ports are used in step 9 of this task.

About this task

The DDMC pushes an OVA package to create the DDNVM on a vCenter in the VMware environment and deploy Smart Scale services.

Steps

  1. In the left side navigation panel, select Infrastructure > Data Centers.
  2. Click the arrow in the bottom-right corner of a data center to expand the card view.
  3. Click Deploy Services.
Getting Started window opens, showing the minimum requirements and additional information needed for deployment. Click Next.
NOTE If a passphrase is not previously entered, you are prompted to enter a passphrase before the Getting Started window opens.
  4. Enter the IP address or hostname for the vCenter. Port is 443 by default. Click Verify and Accept Host Certificate and click Accept.
  5. Enter a Username and Password, and click Next.
For security reasons, the user must have lookup-only privileges to connect to the vCenter and view the inventory. Lookup credentials are used to keep the DDNVM network configurations up to date with the vCenter.
  6. To configure the vCenter, provide the Data Center, Cluster, Datastore, and Portgroup.
  7. Enter a unique VM name to deploy to host services.
  8. Enter the following network settings and click Next:
    • MTU, the default MTU for all interfaces
    • IP address
    • Netmask
    • Gateway
    • MTU
    • VLAN ID
NOTE If in trunk (distributed) mode, a list of VLAN IDs is displayed as a dropdown. For all other modes, access mode or trunk (standard) mode, VLAN ID is displayed as a read-only number.
  9. Assign the external ports to be used for Smart Scale services, and click Next.
Ensure that all ports are open and not used by any other service in the vCenter environment.
  10. Optional: Configure any additional settings (time zone, NTP, DNS, and syslog server) for the virtual machine hosting Smart Scale services. Click Next.
  11. Enter username and password for deployment, and click Next.
Credentials that are used for this deployment are not stored.
  12. Review the Summary page, and click Deploy.

Results

Smart Scale services show as "deploying," and a progress bar indicates deployment progress.

Deploying the DDNVM on a vCenter can take up to 30 minutes. Deployment time varies depending on:

  • Network bandwidth
  • Load on the vCenter (number of ESXi hosts and datastores)
  • Other network configuration factors (LAN or WAN, network latency, and so on)

Once complete, Smart Scale services show "Smart Scale Services running" on the data center. Details can be viewed from Health > Jobs.

If deployment fails, these options are available:

OptionDescription
RetryPrompts you for vCenter credentials and is not an opportunity to edit deployment configurations
Cancel DeploymentCloses the deployment wizard
Edit deployed Smart Scale servicesEnables you to edit deployment configurations
