PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Virtual Machine User Guide

Prerequisites for backups

Review the following requirements for file-level restores to an alternate location before performing a backup.

Before performing a backup, ensure at least one of the following:

CAUTION:If the VM Direct agent is not installed and indexing is not enabled, files and directories might not appear in the expected location when trying to select them. In this scenario, trying to locate a particular file or directory can be time consuming.
  1. The VM Direct agent is installed. The VM Direct agent is automatically installed when a file-level restore is performed. However, assets that were backed up when the VM Direct agent was not installed cannot be restored to an alternate location using a file-level restore. For more information about manually installing the VM Direct agent, see the chapter on restoring virtual machine data and assets.
  2. The protection policy used to perform the backup has the Enable indexing for file search and restore option configured. If indexing is configured, a file-level restore from a search operation can be performed even if the VM Direct agent was not installed when the assets were backed up. For more information about enabling indexing for a protection policy, see the chapter on managing virtual machine assets and protection.
