PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Oracle RMAN User Guide

Parallel backups in an Oracle environment

PowerProtect Data Manager can perform parallel backups of the databases or assets that are configured under the same protection policy and client. The backup parallelism value in the Oracle RMAN agent configuration file determines the maximum number of assets from a protection policy that are backed up concurrently. By default, PowerProtect Data Manager backs up a maximum of four assets in parallel.

If required on Linux and AIX, you can optionally change the number of assets from the same protection policy that are backed up in parallel, based on the client resources. To change the backup parallelism value, edit the Oracle RMAN configuration file $RMAN_AGENT_HOME/config/rman_agent.cfg on the Oracle host. In the [GENERAL] section of the configuration file, set the BACKUP_PARALLELISM parameter to the number of assets to be backed up in parallel. For example:

NOTE:PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 on Windows does not support the BACKUP_PARALLELISM parameter setting in the configuration file.
BACKUP_PARALLELISM = 6

If you set the BACKUP_PARALLELISM parameter to a large number, the setting is reset to the maximum number of assets in the protection policy as required. If you set the parameter to 0 or 1, PowerProtect Data Manager runs the backups sequentially.

After you set the BACKUP_PARALLELISM parameter, the next scheduled or manual asset backups will run in parallel according to the parameter setting.
