Install the Oracle RMAN agent and PowerProtect Data Manager agent on Windows

Learn how to install the Oracle RMAN agent and PowerProtect Data Manager agent on all the Windows database servers that must access the DD system. The user that performs the Oracle RMAN agent installation must have permissions to run the Microsoft Installer (MSI) technology binaries. If the local users do not have such permissions, the administrator must complete the installation.

Prerequisites

On Windows, an Oracle RMAN agent installation requires 300 MB of disk space for the installation directory and 100 MB of disk space for generated logs. If the logs are enabled for debugging, then the space requirement increases accordingly.

If the pathname of the installation location includes a space, ensure that the volume has the short name notation enabled.

Increase the Windows Event Viewer log size by adding 50 MB or more for each Oracle database. The Oracle online document Database Administrator's Reference for Microsoft Windows provides more information about how to increase the Windows Event Viewer log size. In the online document, see the chapter "Monitoring a Database on Windows" and topic "Managing Event Viewer."

NOTE:

You can install the Oracle RMAN agent only once on each Oracle server host.

To enable the latest software features, it is recommended that you use the same version of the PowerProtect Data Manager and Oracle RMAN agent. In a RAC system, you must install the Oracle RMAN agent and PowerProtect Data Manager agent on each node.

As the Administrator or a user from the Administrators group, you can install the software in a user-specified directory or in the default installation directory. The default directory is C:\Program Files\DPSAPPS\RMANAgent, which is the default %RMAN_AGENT_HOME% location.

Complete the following steps to download and install the Oracle RMAN agent and PowerProtect Data Manager agent software on a supported Windows system.

Steps

  1. In the PowerProtect Data Manager UI:
    1. Click Settings icon, and then select Downloads from the System Settings menu.
    2. Under Oracle, select Download Agent.
    3. Select Download for Windows to download the Oracle RMAN agent software package.

      The software package ddrman1917_win_x64.zip is downloaded.

    4. Copy the package to any user-defined directory with Oracle user ownership on the Oracle server host where you want to install the Oracle RMAN agent.
    NOTE:See Chapter 8 in the PowerProtect Data Manager Security Configuration Guide for details on how to verify the authenticity and integrity of the downloaded package.
  2. Open ddrman1917_win_x64.zip with WinZip, and use WinZip to extract the file.
  3. Ensure that no backups are running. Before you install the Oracle RMAN agent software, stop the Oracle RMAN processes.
