PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Oracle RMAN User Guide

Enable the app-optimized compression for Oracle backups

When you enable the app-optimized compression for Oracle backups, the app-optimized compression improves the deduplication rate and reduces the overall storage that is required for the backups. You can enable app-optimized compression through either the PowerProtect Data Manager UI or the appropriate commands at the command line.

NOTE:

Enabling or disabling the app-optimized compression feature impacts the deduplication and storage usage of a new backup.

If app-optimized compression is required for an Oracle protection policy, it is recommended that all the required storage units be created with the Oracle app-optimized compression feature before you create the protection policy.

A storage unit that is enabled for Oracle app-optimized compression cannot be shared with other applications.

After you enable the Oracle app-optimized compression for a storage unit, the term AO is displayed after the storage unit name on certain pages in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI. When you add or edit a protection policy in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI, the term AO is displayed on the policy Objectives and Summary pages. The term AO is also displayed on the Protection Policies details page.

Enable the app-optimized compression through the PowerProtect Data Manager UI

Oracle app-optimized compression through the PowerProtect Data Manager UI is only supported for Oracle workloads with DDOS 8.1 or later.

To enable the app-optimized compression option through the PowerProtect Data Manager UI, set the required UI option when you create or edit the storage unit for use with protection policies.

Complete the following steps to create the storage unit and enable the option.

  1. From the left navigation pane, select Infrastructure > Storage.

    The Storage window appears.

  2. On the Protection Storage tab, select a storage system and then select More Actions > Manage Storage Units.

The Storage Units page opens and displays a list of the storage units under the control of PowerProtect Data Manager.

  3. Select Add.

The Create Storage Unit dialog box opens.

  4. Set all the required options in the Create Storage Unit dialog box, as described in the topic "Create a storage unit" in the PowerProtect Data Manager Administrator Guide.

To enable the app-optimized compression for the storage unit, click the toggle button for the Oracle App-Optimized Compression option to change the setting to Enabled.

Complete the following steps to edit the storage unit option settings as required.

  3. To view the details or usage for a storage unit, select Details for that storage unit.

The Details pane opens and displays the name, type, capacity, quota information, and a list of protection policies that currently target the storage unit.

The storage unit may contain copies from protection policies that no longer target the storage unit.

  4. Select the appropriate storage unit from the list, and then select Edit.

The Edit Storage Unit dialog box opens.

  5. Set the required options in the Edit Storage Unit dialog box, as described in the topic "Edit a storage unit" in the PowerProtect Data Manager Administrator Guide.

To change the app-optimized compression for the storage unit, click the toggle button for the Oracle App-Optimized Compression option to change the setting as required.

Enable app-optimized compression through the command line

To enable the app-optimized compression through the command line, perform the following steps for a storage unit that is created by a PowerProtect Data Manager protection policy for Oracle backups on a DD system.

  1. To identify the storage unit and DD server IP address, run the ./ddutil -s command in the $RMAN_AGENT_HOME/bin directory on the Oracle RMAN agent host.
  2. To enable the app-optimized compression, run the following commands on the PowerProtect DD:

mtree option set app-optimized-compression oracle1 mtree /data/col1/orcl-16k-x4-m-re-07-sip1-1dfaemtree option show mtree /data/col1/orcl-16k-x4-m-re-07-sip1-1dfae
    Name Option Value
    ----------------------------------------- ------------------------- -------
    /data/col1/orcl-16k-x4-m-re-07-sip1-1dfae app-optimized-compression oracle1
