PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Oracle RMAN User Guide

Disable DD Boost write compression for encrypted Oracle backups

PowerProtect Data Manager version 19.16 or later supports an option to disable the DD Boost write compression for Oracle Application Direct backups with DDOS 8.0 or later. You can disable the DD Boost write compression for backups through a PowerProtect Data Manager UI option or an RMAN command option.

When you disable the DD Boost write compression, the backup performance is increased for Oracle databases that are enabled for Oracle HCC (Hybrid Columnar Compression), Oracle Exadata HCC, or Oracle TDE (Transparent Data Encryption). The Oracle backup data is sent uncompressed over the network, which is recommended when the data being backed up is encrypted.

NOTE:The option to disable the DD Boost write compression is not available for Oracle Incremental Merge backups.

You can set the option for individual Oracle assets or databases and either centralized or self-service protection policies.

In the PowerProtect Data Manager UI, you can set the option as follows before you start a centralized or self-service backup.

  1. In the PowerProtect Data Manager UI, select Infrastructure > Assets and select the Oracle tab.
  2. In the asset list, select the required asset that has been added in the backup protection policy.
  3. Select More Actions > Set DDBoost Compression.
  4. In the Disable DDBoost Write Compression dialog, select the option Disable DDBoost compression during write operation and click Save.

NOTE:By default, the DD Boost write compression is enabled for backups.

As an alternative, before a self-service backup, you can disable the DD Boost write compression by using a parameter setting. You can include the DISABLE_DDBOOST_WRITE_COMPRESSION=TRUE parameter settings in the ALLOCATE CHANNEL command in the RMAN backup script.

After a backup, you can check the application agent logs or sbtio logs to confirm that the option was enabled during the backup. When the option has been enabled, the logs record information that confirms the DISABLE_DDBOOST_WRITE_COMPRESSION parameter was set to TRUE during the backup.
