PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 Oracle RMAN User Guide

Generate alerts for missing dependent logs

Oracle dependent logs typically refer to redo logs or archive logs. These logs contain a record of all the changes that are made to an Oracle database, such as changes from INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, and DDL operations.

PowerProtect Data Manager generates alerts to inform users about any missing dependent logs during a backup of the database with the archive logs. This feature is designed to maintain the integrity of the Oracle data during backup and recovery procedures. You can address any issues that are related to missing logs to ensure the consistency of the Oracle data.

Dependent logs are associated with Application Direct and Oracle Incremental Merge full, incremental, and cumulative backup copies. A scheduled system task runs every day at 8:30 AM UTC. If a scheduled task detects any missing dependent logs, an alert is generated for the associated backup copies. When the system detects any missing dependent logs for backup copies, it groups the copies per asset and then generates an alert in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI:

  • If an asset has five missing dependent logs, those missing dependent logs are grouped into one alert.
  • If an asset has more than 50 missing dependent logs, 50 of the missing dependent logs are grouped into one alert. The remaining logs are grouped into another alert.

An alert for missing dependent logs includes the following type of details:

Dependent copies are missing for <number_of_copies> backup copies of the asset <asset_name> created between <start_time> and <end_time> on the host <hostname>. Backup-time: <backup_create_time>, Copy Type: <backup_type>
Details
The dependent copies of one or more backup copies of the specified asset could not be detected.
Recommended Action
Perform log backup if not performed already.

You can view the alerts for missing dependent logs in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI:

  1. From the PowerProtect Data Manager UI left navigation pane, select Alerts.
  2. In the Alerts window, view the information in the table, which displays the details for the missing dependent logs. For example, in the following window, the missing dependent log alert has the message ID CPM0018.
