PowerProtect Data Manager 19.17 File System User Guide

Update scenarios in file filters

Update the application agent (NAS or File System) to the latest agent version along with any PowerProtect Data Manager software update. This update allows you to apply file filters protection policy backups.

Filters that were used for backups on hosts with agent versions that are earlier than 19.16 continue to function as usual, if they are not edited using PowerProtect Data Manager 19.16 or later. Filters created by PowerProtect Data Manager 19.16 or later cannot be used with hosts with agent versions 19.15 or earlier.

For example:

  1. PowerProtect Data Manager 19.15 has assets from two File System hosts (host A and host B), both at agent version 19.15.
  2. PowerProtect Data Manager is updated to version 19.16, host A is updated to agent version 19.16, and host B remains at agent version 19.15.

In this scenario, editing the filter produces a different result than leaving it as it is

  • If the filter is not edited, the protection policy for both host A and host B continues to back up files by applying the filters as they functioned in 19.15.
  • If the filter is edited using the PowerProtect Data Manager 19.16 UI or API, then:
    • The backup operation on agent version 19.16 host A applies the filter as expected.
    • The backup operation on agent version 19.15 host B does not apply the filter since agent version 19.15 is not compatible with the new filter.
NOTE:This is indicated in the backup job status as Complete with exceptions. The exception message indicates that this host agent must be updated for the filter to be applied. A full backup is taken with no filters on host B.

Use the new filtering capabilities in PowerProtect Data Manager 19.16 by updating the host B agent version to 19.16.

NOTE:
  • The allowed proxy levels for NAS share are PowerProtect Data Manager 19.15 and later.
  • Failure to apply a file filter on a backup means, the backup is a full backup with no files filtered out. There is no data loss encountered.
