PowerProtect Data Manager 19.15 Microsoft Exchange Server User Guide

Add settings for centralized backups of Microsoft Exchange Server DAG

For centralized backups of databases in a Microsoft Exchange Server DAG, you can optionally add parameter settings for the type of backup and the server order list in the Userlockbox.cfg configuration file.

About this task

With the backuptype parameter setting in the Userlockbox.cfg configuration file, you can specify one of three types of DAG backups:

  • Active node backup

    In a DAG, the active node is the server where the primary mailbox databases are mounted. When you set backuptype=active in the configuration file, the backup is triggered from the active node only. If the active node is inaccessible, the backup fails. The backup does not fall back to use the passive node.

  • Passive node backup

    In a DAG, the passive node is the server where the passive mailbox database copies are mounted and continuously replicated from the active node. When you set backuptype=passive in the configuration file, the backup is triggered from the DAG database passive node only. If the passive node is inaccessible, the backup fails. The backup does not fall back to use the active node.

  • Preferred node backup

    In a DAG, the default backup type is the preferred node backup. When you set backuptype=preferred in the configuration file, the backup first tries to use the passive node. If the passive node is inaccessible, the backup falls back to use the active node.

With the serverorderlist parameter setting, you can specify the server order list for the order in which the DAG servers are backed up.

Perform the following steps to specify the preferred parameter settings for centralized Microsoft Exchange Server DAG backups.

Steps

  1. Create a file named Userlockbox.cfg in the required directory:
    NOTE:If you create the configuration file for a Microsoft Exchange Server DAG, ensure that you create the file on each DAG node, with the same parameter settings in each file.
    • When the Microsoft application agent is installed in the default directory, create the Userlockbox.cfg file in the C:\Program Files\DPSAPPS\common\lockbox directory.
    • When the Microsoft application agent is installed in a non-default directory, add the common\lockbox subdirectory in the installation directory and create the Userlockbox.cfg file in the <installation_directory>\common\lockbox directory.
  2. In the Userlockbox.cfg file, add the parameter settings as needed:
    • Specify the type of DAG backup in the backuptype parameter setting. The valid parameter setting is active, passive, or preferred. For example:

      backuptype=passive
      NOTE:If you do not set this parameter, the default DAG backup type is the preferred node backup:
      backuptype=preferred
    • Specify the DAG server order list in the serverorderlist parameter setting. The valid parameter setting is a comma-separated list of node names. Use only the short name, not the fully qualified domain name (FQDN), for each node name. For example:

      serverorderlist=node1,node2
