PowerProtect Data Manager 19.14 Virtual Machine User Guide

TSDM backup fails with an ABV0016 error

If a virtual machine is on ESXi version 7.0 u3d or later, you might see a TSDM backup job for it with a status of Failed and an error of ABV0016.

About this task

This can occur when the ESXi host is unable to handle a certain number of concurrent backup requests.

To resolve the issue, perform the following procedure to reduce the maximum number of backup sessions per ESXi host:

NOTE:If PowerProtect Data Manager is updated to a newer version, these changes are lost and the procedure must be performed again.

Steps

  1. Wait until there are no running backup jobs.
  2. Log in to the PowerProtect Data Manager server console using administrator credentials and change to the root user.
  3. Run the command cd /opt/emc/vmdirect/unit.
  4. Edit the file vmdirect.env.
  5. Search for the following variable and assign it a value of 10:
    MAX_SDM_BACKUP_SESSIONS_PER_HOST=10
  6. Save the file.
  7. Run the command systemctl restart visd.service.

Results

This resolves the issue, but increases the time required for multiple concurrent backups.
