PowerProtect Data Manager 19.14 Virtual Machine User Guide

Restore Plans

Adding a restore plan in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI enables you to orchestrate and automate the restore of multiple virtual machine assets protected by PowerProtect Data Manager. A restore plan is the logical container for restore groups, which can include anywhere from a few critical assets to many virtual machines. These restore groups can collect virtual machine assets based on their restore characteristics, and additional groups can be created within the plan for assets with different restore attributes. Once a restore plan is configured, you can quickly run all of the restores defined for this plan without the need of navigation through different restore wizards in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI.

Benefits of using a restore plan to restore virtual machines include:

  • Mass restore, with the ability to sort virtual machines into different restore groups within the plan, based on characteristics specific to those virtual machines.
  • A simplified restore workflow, so that a restore can be performed quickly with minimal steps.
  • An alternative to disaster recovery (performed as an Instant Access restore to the original virtual machine), or as a test disaster recovery to a new location.

Restore plans support many of the same virtual machine restore workflows already available in PowerProtect Data Manager, including Restore and Overwrite Original VM, Create and Restore to a New VM, Instant Access Restore, and Instant Recovery. The use of restore plans is not supported for the following types of virtual machine restores:

  • File Level Restore
  • Individual Virtual Machine Disk (VMDK) Restore
NOTE:Only an Administrator or Restore Administrator can configure and run restore plans. These roles have been enhanced with privileges specific to restore plans.

The virtual assets in a restore plan are organized by restore groups. You can define up to 64 restore groups in each plan, and a restore group can include up to 500 assets. Asset inclusion in a restore group is determined by one of the following three methods:

  • Include assets according to rule definitions.
  • Manually select the assets to include.
  • Include assets based on their protection policy association.

Restore plan functionality is also available in the REST API. The PowerProtect Data Manager Public REST API documentation contains the Dell Technologies APIs and includes tutorials to guide you in their use.
