Perform the following procedure to add a Restore Plan with the manual selection type.
About this task
Only an
Administrator or
Restore Administrator can perform this task.
Steps
From the left navigation pane, select
Restore > Restore Plans.
The
Restore Plans window appears.
In the
Restore Plans window, click
Add.
The
Add Restore Plan wizard appears.
On the
Description page, specify the following fields, and then click
Next:
Name—Type a descriptive name for the plan.
Description—Type a description for the plan.
Scope—Select from one of the following plan scopes:
Option
Description
All Assets
Select this option to view all protected assets that are available for plan inclusion.
Select Resource Group
Used to restore only specific assets from resource groups that the user has access to, based on Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and Identity Based Access Control (IBAC). Select this option to display a list of the virtual asset resource groups, and then select one or more resource groups from the table.
On the
Restore Groups page, click
Add Group.
The wizard expands to display pages specific to the restore group, starting with
Description and Type.
NOTE:Some restore group options in the wizard, such as
Selection Type, can be left blank and completed later. Mandatory fields include the
Group Name and
Asset Type on the
Description and Type page, and the restore type on the
Location page. Restore plans that have been added with an incomplete configuration are identified with a status of
Requires input in the
Restore Plans window.
On the
Restore Groups > Description and Type page, specify the following fields, and then click
Next:
Group Name—Type a descriptive name for the group.
Description—Type a description for the group.
Asset Type—Only
Virtual Machine asset types are currently supported.
Selection Type—Select
Manual Selection.
Click
Next.
On the
Restore Groups > Assets page, select one or more assets that are available for restore, and then click
Next.
On the
Restore Groups > Copy Selection page:
Select
Use latest copy to use the most recently protected copy of the virtual assets, or select
Use latest copy from a custom time frame to select a copy from a specific point-in-time. If the system cannot locate a copy in your specified time range, select
Use latest copy if no copy is found in the specified time window.
From the
Select a Protection Storage list, select the destination protection storage for the restore. If you do not select a protection storage system, the restore plan uses the storage system that contains the most recent backup copy.
Click
Next.
On the
Restore Groups > Location page, select the restore type, and then click
Next:
Restore and overwrite the original VM: Select to restore the virtual machine to the original location on the vCenter Server, overwriting the virtual machine in the original location.
Restore to New VM: Select to create a new virtual machine on the same or a different vCenter Server, and then expand the hierarchical view to select the datacenter location within the vCenter server where you want to restore the virtual machine.
NOTE:If the destination for the restore is a different vCenter Server, ensure that this vCenter is also added as an asset source in
PowerProtect Data Manager. Otherwise, the vCenter will not display.
Instant Access: Mount the protection storage and access the virtual machine instantly.
The wizard updates to display pages specific to the restore type selected.
NOTE:The
File Level Restore and
Virtual Machine Disk Restore types are not supported for restore plans.
For a
Restore to New VM, on the
Restore Groups > Datastore page, the available datastores display based on the datacenter location that was selected in the previous step.
Select the datastore where you want to restore the virtual machine disks. The free space in each datastore is displayed.
Select the
Provisioning Type to use, or leave the default selection to keep the existing virtual machine provisioning type.
Click
Next.
For a
Restore to New VM or
Instant Access restore, the
Restore Groups > Networks page displays the source network, source vCenter Server, and source datacenter information for any virtual machines in the restore group that were backed up with a source network. On this page, you can specify whether you want to map these virtual machines to the same network, or a different network:
Select
Set the destination for networks that are not mapped explicitly, and then select a network from the
Select Destination Network list to default to the selected network for all unmapped networks.
Select
Add Network Mapping. The
Add Network Mapping wizard appears.
On the
Source Networks page, select the
Source vCenter,
Source Datacenter, and
Source Network. You can click
+ (ADD) to create additional network mappings. When the source networks are added, click Next.
On the
Destination Networks page, select the
Destination Network, and then click
Save.
If you need to make changes, such as removing a network, click
Edit Network Mapping.
When the network mapping is complete, click
Next.
On the
Restore Groups > Configuration page:
For
Restore to New VM and
Instant Access, optionally select
Power on the virtual machine when the restore completes. This option is selected by default when instant access is enabled.
Select
Restore VM Tags to restore the vCenter tags and categories that are associated with this backup copy. Tags are backed up by default as part of the virtual machine protection policy backup.
NOTE:You can only select this option when restoring entire virtual machines. Selecting this option replaces any existing tags and categories on the assets in the restore location with tags and categories from the assets in the restored copy. Tags and categories being restored that do not exist on the vCenter server at the time of the restore, or have been deleted, are re-created as part of the restore, along with the tag description and the cardinality settings that determine the relationship of tags within a category. If tags and categories on the vCenter server have been renamed since the last backup, the renamed tags and categories will not be overwritten after restore. For example, if a tag ID is the same but the tag name has been changed since the backup, a new tag is created based on the tag name in the backup copy being restored.
After a successful restore, the replaced tags and categories are not deleted in the
vSphere Client, and can be viewed in the
Tags & Custom Attributes window, or the
Tags pane of the
Summary window when the virtual machine is selected.
For
Restore and overwrite the original VM and
Restore to New VM, select
Restore Storage Policies if you also want to restore any virtual machine disk-level or non-disk specific storage policy assignments.
If you select this option but the backup copy was taken with
PowerProtect Data Manager 19.5 and earlier, or the storage policy is not available, the virtual machine restore proceeds but any storage policy association is not restored.
NOTE:Enabling this option requires vCenter version 6.7 or later.
For low-bandwidth environments, select
Enable DDBoost Compression.
This option reduces network usage by compressing data on the
protection storage system before transfer to the
VM Direct Engine, which decompresses the data. Compression reduces restore times but increases CPU usage on both systems.
For
Restore to New VM and
Instant Access, select
Restore BIOS UUID to restore the BIOS UUID that was associated with the virtual machine at the time of backup.
For
Restore and overwrite the original VM, select
Restore VM Configuration if the disk configuration has changed since the original virtual machine backup to restore the configuration that existed at the time of this backup. If there were changes to the VM disk configuration, you cannot clear this option.
For
Select a Protection Engine, move the slider to the right if you want to override the automatic protection engine selection, and then select another
VM Direct Engine to use for the restore. When the restore job is started, the name of the protection engine that is used for the restore displays in the
Jobs window
Details pane.
Click
Next.
On the
Restore Groups > Review Group page, review the summary of the restore group settings, and then click
Complete Group.
The
Restore Groups page updates to display the saved restore groups.
If you want to create additional restore groups for the restore plan:
Click
Add Group, and then navigate through the wizard to configure the new group.
Alternatively, click
Clone within an existing group's details pane to create a copy of this restore group with a new name, and then edit the settings of the cloned group.
When all the restore groups for this plan have been created, click
Next.
When more than one restore group has been added to a restore plan, the
Priority page displays.
On the
Priority page:
Use the list in the
Priority Groups column to specify a numerical priority for each restore group listed. More than one group can have the same priority number, but the order must not include gaps (for example,
1, 2, 2,
1, 2, 3,
1, 2, 1, 3). If you specify the same number for multiple restore groups, these restore groups are run simultaneously.
Optionally, select
Continue with the restore if a restore group fails to proceed with the next restore group in priority order when one of the group restores is unsuccessful. When the checkbox is cleared, if a restore group fails then the restore of the lower priority restore groups will be canceled since these groups might depend on the success of higher priority group.
Click
Next.
On the
Summary page, review the remaining restore plan settings, and then click
Finish.
The new restore plan is added to the
Restore Plans window. From this window, you can view the status of each restore plan:
Running: The restore plan is in progress. Go to
Jobs > Protection Jobs to monitor the restore.
Ready: The restore plan configuration is complete, but it has not been run or scheduled to run.
Requires input: The restore plan configuration is incomplete. When you select this restore plan and click
Restore, the Restore Plan wizard opens on the Summary page, which displays a warning symbol in the appropriate step that identifies which aspect of the restore plan requires completion.
Scheduled: A schedule has been defined for this restore plan but has not been run yet. Select
More Options > Schedule to view the schedule for this restore plan.
