TSDM backup fails with an SDM Full Sync operation error

If the DPD service startup policy of the ESXi host of a virtual machine being backed up is not set to Start and stop with host, the backup job can fail.

About this task

The backup job fails with a status of Failed and the following error is displayed:

Unable to successfully complete SDM Full Sync operation. Unsuccessful after … attempts over … The vCenter task for 'SDM Snapshot Sync fullSync' completed with state 'error'. The vCenter task failed. The operation is not allowed in the current state.

To resolve the issue, perform the following procedure.

Steps

  1. In the vSphere Client, select the ESXI host that contains the virtual machine being protected, and then select the Configure tab.
  2. In the left navigation, select Services.
  3. Select the DPD service and click Start.
  4. With the DPD service still selected, click Edit Startup Policy
  5. In the Edit Startup Policy dialog, ensure that the DPD service startup policy on the ESXi host is set to Start and stop with host.
  6. Restart the failed backup job from PowerProtect Data Manager.
