Define protection policy

Define a protection policy to create a schedule for the protection of the primary backup and the cloud copy.

Prerequisites

Recommendations for virtual machine protection policies in the PowerProtect Data Manager Administration and User Guide apply to protection policies for Cloud DR.

Steps

  1. Log in to the PowerProtect Data Manager and select Protection > Protection Policies.
    The Protection Policies window appears
  2. Click Add.
    The Add Policy wizard opens.
  3. On the Type page, specify the following fields and click OK:
    1. Name
    2. Description
    3. Type. Cloud DR supports only Virtual Machine policy type.
  4. On the Purpose page, select Crash Consistent (the only supported option for Cloud DR).
  5. On the Assets page, select the unprotected assets that you want to back up as part of this protection policy.
    Use one of the following options to select the assets.
    • View by Host.
    • View Asset Table.

  6. Optionally, you can exclude disks from a protection policy as Cloud DR supports exclusion of disks in protection workflow.

  7. Click Next. If any virtual objects or assets that were selected in the previous page overlap with assets with an existing protection policy, the Selection Overlap page appears.

  8. Click Next.
    The protection policy Objectives page appears. No default schedule is provided. If a backup has not been performed, no schedules are displayed.
  9. Click Add to create a schedule to protect the assets.
    The Add Primary Backup dialog box appears.
  10. Specify the following fields in the Target section:
    • Storage Name - Select an existing storage from the Storage Name list or select New to add a new storage. See Add new storage target for more information about adding a new storage target.
    • Storage Unit
    • Network Interface
    • SLA - Select an existing backup SLA from the SLA list or select New to add a backup SLA. See Add Backup Service Level Agreement
  11. Specify the following fields in the Schedules section:
    • Backup period
    • Retention period
    • Start time and end time for the retention period.
    The Primary Backup is configured.
  12. Click the Cloud DR link next to the Primary Backup.
    The Cloud DR option is available next to the Primary Backup.
  13. Click Add.
    The Add CDR Backup dialog is displayed.
  14. Select the appropriate cloud target from the Cloud Target list or click Add to add cloud target.
    1. In the Add Cloud Target dialog, select a Storage Account from the list. If you know the storage account name, begin typing the name to shorten the list of possible matches.
      The Storage Account location is automatically selected in the Location field.
    2. Click Save to add the new cloud target.
  15. Specify the retention period for the cloud (this retention is different than the primary backup retention period).
  16. Select an existing service level agreement that you want to apply to the cloud schedule from the SLA list. Alternatively, select Add to create an SLA within the Add Cloud DR Service Level Agreement window. Provide an SLA name and RPO value, and click Save.
  17. Click Next.
    The Options page is displayed.
  18. Configure the following fields in the Options page:
    • Optimize for
    • Exclude swap files in backup
    • Enable guest file system quiescing
  19. Click Next.
    The Summary page appears.

  20. Review the protection policy group configuration details. To change protection policy details, click Edit for the category that you want to change. Click Finish.
    A message is displayed to confirm that PowerProtect Data Manager saved the protection policy.
  21. To exit the window, click OK. To open the Jobs window and monitor the backup of the new protection policy group, click Go to Jobs .

Next steps

When the local backup is available on the PowerProtect DD system, the backup copy files are automatically sent to the cloud based on the policy.

You can also view the protection status by logging in to the Cloud DR Server UI and clicking the Protection menu. From there, you can view the protected VMs, their upload status, and the latest backup copy that is available in the cloud. You can also select individual VMs that you want to enable for rapid recovery operation. For more information, see the Cloud Disaster Recovery Installation and Administration Guide.

NOTE If the protection job fails, the workflow cancels the Cloud DR job. The retry option for the Cloud DR job is not supported. If a protection job with protection stage and Cloud DR stage fails, the Cloud DR is canceled and cannot be restarted.

When an asset has a policy in which protection and Cloud DR stages are outside the activity window, protection is not triggered for VMware Data Manager. The Cloud DR job produces an empty copy.
