PowerProtect Data Manager 19.11 Microsoft SQL Server User Guide

Troubleshooting unprotected asset issue after disaster recovery

After you perform a disaster recovery of a Microsoft SQL Server instance, the PowerProtect Data Manager UI unexpectedly lists the last backup copy for any unprotected assets.

After the disaster recovery, when you open the Infrastructure > Assets window in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI and select the SQL tab, the Last Copy column in the table of assets lists the last backup copy for each unprotected asset. The unprotected assets are the databases that were restored from previous backups, but the assets have not yet been added to a protection policy.

As a workaround, perform the following steps:

  1. Register the Microsoft SQL Server host.
  2. Perform backups of all the assets, including the system database.
  3. Uninstall the Microsoft SQL Server instance, which removes all the databases.
  4. Rebuild the Microsoft SQL Server instance.
  5. Restore the databases by using DDSSMSAddinApp.exe with the option to overwrite the existing databases.
  6. In PowerProtect Data Manager, run an on-demand discovery for the Microsoft SQL Server host. All the restored assets with new natural IDs are discovered.
  7. Manually remove the assets from the protection policy.
  8. In the case where all the backup copies are expired, delete the assets manually from the Infrastructure > Assets window in the PowerProtect Data Manager UI.
