DataIQ 2.2.x.x Installation Guide

Prepare a virtual machine to host DataIQ

This topic describes how to set up and log onto the new VM created from the OVA.

About this task

You can host DataIQ and its features entirely on a solid-state drive (SSD), or you can split it across drives so that the operating system and other features that don't require the performance of an SSD are stored on a less expensive hard disk drive (HDD).

Steps

  1. Save the OVA file to the server that will be hosting the DataIQ application. The OVA file is only used for creating the VM and can be stored on any drive type.
  2. Create a new VM based on the OVA using a virtualization platform such as VMware vSphere, using options to deploy an OVA or an OVF. For example, in VMWare vSphere, Deploy an OVF template starts the process of creating the VM immediately using the OVA.
When prompted, select the storage path for the operating system for the new virtual machine. If you are using both SSD and HDD drives, you should host this location on an HDD. The OVA configures the datastore as a logical volume that can be resized later by adding new drives or partitions.
  3. In the virtualization platform, modify the VM to meet your system needs, meeting at least these system requirements:
    • Memory: 32 GB required; 64 GB recommended. To learn more, see Host Requirements.
    • Processors: 4 required; 8 recommended. To learn more, see Host Requirements.
    • Network configured for the VLAN. On some networks, you may need to change the Network Adapter from Bridged to network address translation (NAT).
  4. Modify the VM datastore(s) to meet the minimum drive requirements.
    • To host the data management database on a separate SSD (recommended): Create a new empty datastore with at least 500 GB, saved on an SSD drive location.
    • To host the data management database on the same drive: Expand the primary drive from 80 GB to at least 580 GB.
    • These drives are created as logical partitions, which allow you to add storage capacity later. To learn more, see Drives: Planning for future growth.

  5. Power on the new VM.
  6. Log in using the username: dataiqadmin and password dataiqadmin.
  7. Change to root:
    sudo su -
  8. Set the new root password to a secure password.
    passwd root

Keep this password safe using your organization's recommended security practices. This password is used for backups and restores.
