DataIQ 2.2 Admin Guide

PDF

Deployment model

DataIQ is deployed in a Kubernetes cluster that is managed by Docker. The base operating system is Linux. The following figure shows the required deployment stack.

Figure 1. DataIQ deployment stack

The components in the stack work together to build a secure system.

Linux Linux is the operating system interface between software and hardware. DataIQ supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, or Oracle Linux.

For each product release, Dell EMC reviews and mitigates base operating system security issues that are relevant to DataIQ functions. Customers may periodically update the operating system with patches for newly-found security issues. Use the procedures at https://forums.centos.org.

Docker Docker is a Container Runtime Interface (CRI) that runs on Linux and provides the container environments for Kubernetes.

During DataIQ setup, the DataIQ installer installs and configures Docker. In OVA-based installs, the Docker image is included in the VM. In RPM-based installs, the Docker image is included in the DataIQ Dependencies package. If the Dependencies package is not preloaded, then the installer downloads and installs an appropriate Docker image from the web.

Kubernetes The Kubernetes cluster manages and orchestrates Kubernetes Pods, which can include multiple containers and the application images that run in them.

During DataIQ setup, the DataIQ installer installs and configures Kubernetes . In OVA-based installs, the Kubernetes distribution is included in the VM. In RPM-based installs, the Kubernetes distribution is included in the DataIQ Dependencies package. If the Dependencies package is not preloaded, then the installer downloads and installs an appropriate Kubernetes distribution from the web.

DataIQ follows the security guidelines recommended by Kubernetes. For information about the benefits of Kubernetes security, see the Securing a Cluster section of the Kubernetes documentation.

DataIQ All DataIQ microservices run as Docker container images, which are orchestrated using a Kubernetes Pod.

DataIQ administrators can manage the Pods, view their status, delete them, stop them, and more.

DataIQ includes connections to:

  • A web-based user interface
  • The systems that are being monitored, such as PowerScale clusters and cloud storage
  • Volumes that store DataIQ data

For controls on these connections, see Security controls map.

To learn about DataIQ prerequisites and installation, see the DataIQ Installation Guide.
