Before you back up an Oracle database, you must prepare the database. You must determine whether the database is in
ARCHIVELOG mode. If the database is not in
ARCHIVELOG mode, you must use the
alter database archivelog command to set it.
Steps
Connect to the database by typing the following command:
sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
The command prompt changes to the SQL prompt.
Determine if the Oracle database is in
ARCHIVELOG mode by typing the following command:
select log_mode from v$database;
If archiving is not set for the database, screen output similar to the following output appears:
LOG_MODE ---------- NOARCHIVELOG
Shut down the database by typing the following command:
shutdown immediate;
