Measuring the bi-directional bandwidth between VMware ESXi hosts in the PowerFlex node

Use Iperf to measure the maximum possible bandwidth between VMware ESXi hosts in the PowerFlex node.

About this task

Iperf is a component of the VMware vSphere vSAN Health check plug-in.

Steps

  1. Type the following to disable the firewall on all VMware ESXi hosts.
esxcli network firewall set --enabled false
  2. Type the following to create a copy of Iperf3 in the same directory in each host:
    cp usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3 /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperfcopy
  3. Type the following to note the IP address of the interface speed:
esxcli network ip interface ipv4 get
  4. Type the following to test the VMkernel connectivity between the VMware ESXi hosts:
    # vmkping IP address
  5. Type the following to use the copy of Iperf3 as a server:
    ./ usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3.copy –s -B IP address
where IP address is the IP address of the interface to test performance and VMware ESXi as the server (-s) and bound (-B) it to the interface on the VMware ESXi with IP address.
You will see the following message:
    Server listening on 5201
  6. Type the following to use the copy of Iperf as a client on another server:
    / --usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3.copy –c IP address
where IP address is the IP address of the iperf3 server in the previous step.
After the test is complete, go to the iperf3 server (first VMware ESXi) and check the speed. Quit the iperf3 session by typing control + C.
  7. Repeat these steps for each of the hosts.
  8. When you are finished, type the following to enable the firewall on all VMware ESXi hosts:
esxcli network firewall set --enabled true
