Enabling and disabling permanent device loss in VMware vSphere

VMware vSphere responds differently to permanent device loss (PDL) than previous versions of VMware vSphere. Due to this change, VMware recommends you do not disable the AutoRemoveOnPDL feature in VMware vSphere.

About this task

In VMware vSphere, the expectation is that a device in a PDL state will not return. Therefore, the device needs to be removed from the ESXi host, before it can be recovered. If AutoRemoveOnPDL is disabled, perform a manual scan to remove the device while it is in a PDL state.

AutoRemoveOnPDL is enabled by default in VMware vSphere.

Steps

Connect to the VMware ESXi host using the console or SSH.
OptionDescription
Enable AutoRemoveOnPDL esxcli system settings advanced set -o "/Disk/AutoremoveOnPDL" -i 1
Disable AutoRemoveOnPDL esxcli system settings advanced set -o "/Disk/AutoremoveOnPDL" -i 0
