Determining and switching the PowerFlex metadata manager

Manually fail over the PowerFlex metadata manager (MDM) before rebooting it.

About this task

Use any one of the following methods to verify the MDM is the primary MDM:
  • If your system was not deployed using the PowerFlex plug-in, you can use the PowerFlex GUI management software.
  • If your system was deployed using PowerFlex Manager, you can use PowerFlex Manager.

Steps

  1. Optional: If your system was not deployed using the PowerFlex plug-in, in the PowerFlex CLI type the following for each MDM:
esxcli system module parameters list -m scini | grep IoctlMdmIPStr
  2. Log in to the primary or secondaryMDM using PowerFlex GUI management software.
  3. Click MDM > MDM to determine which storage VM (SVM) is the primaryMDM.
  4. Access the primaryMDM:
    1. In a hyperconverged deployment, use SSH to connect to the SVM that is acting as primaryMDM.
    2. In a two-layer deployment, connect to the storage-only node that is acting as primaryMDM using SSH.
  5. From the PowerFlex CLI, type scli --login --username admin --password MDM_password to connect to the source node.
  6. Type scli --query_cluster to re-verify the primaryMDM.
  7. Type scli --switch_mdm_ownership to switch the primaryMDM to the secondaryMDM.
  8. Type scli --query_cluster to re-verify the primaryMDM.
  9. Connect to the new SVM that is acting as primaryMDM using SSH.
  10. Type scli --query_all_sds and verify that all servers are connected.
  11. Type scli --query_all_sdc and verify that all servers are connected.
