Changing a VMware vCenter Single Sign On password

Users in the local domain, vsphere.local by default, can change their VMware vCenter Single Sign On passwords from a Web interface. Users in other domains change their passwords following the rules for that domain.

About this task

NOTE:For the environment with single vCenter with embedded PSC, only one default domain name (vsphere.local) will exist. Use this procedure for the environment with separate vCenters for customer (with external PSCs), and controller vCenter (with embedded PSC).

The VMware vCenter Single Sign-On lockout policy determines when your password expires. By default, VMware vCenter Single Sign On user passwords expire after 90 days, but administrator passwords do not expire. VMware vCenter Single Sign On management interfaces show a warning when your password is about to expire.

If a password is expired, the local domain administrator (administrator@vsphere.local by default) can reset the password using the dir-cli password reset command. Only members of the administrator group for the VMware vCenter Single Sign On domain can reset passwords.

Steps

  1. From a web browser, connect to the Platform Services Controller by entering the following URL: https://psc_hostname_or_IP/psc.

In an embedded deployment, the Platform Services Controller hostname or IP address is the same as the VMware vCenter Server hostname or IP address.

  2. Enter the username and password for administrator@vsphere.local (or another member of the VMware vCenter Single Sign On administrators group.

If you specified a different domain during installation, log in as administrator@mydomain.

  3. In the upper navigation pane, click your username to access the menu.

You can also select Single Sign On > Users and Groups and right-click to select Edit User.

  4. Select Change Password and enter your current password.
  5. Enter a new password and confirm it. The password must conform to the password policy.
  6. Click OK.
