Dell PowerFlex Rack with PowerFlex 3.x Administration Guide

PDF

Considerations

When administering storage in a hyperconverged deployment, observe the following considerations:

  • Always put a storage data server (SDS) into PowerFlex maintenance mode using the PowerFlex GUI management software before putting the VMware ESXi host into maintenance mode in VMware vSphere.
  • Ensure no more than one PowerFlex controller node server is offline at any given time.
  • Ensure no more than one host – storage VM (SVM), VMware ESXi, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or an embedded operating system – is in maintenance mode at any given time.
  • Ensure PowerFlex data networks (data 1, data 2, data 3, and data 4) are not routable.
  • Ensure that you have firewall details regarding what ports/protocols are open before performing administrative procedures.
  • When unmapping a volume using the PowerFlex GUI management software, clear the hosts that you do not want to remove the volume from by clicking Configuration > Volumes.
  • While storage I/O control (SIOC), storage I/O statistics sollection (SIOSC) and network I/O control (NIOC) are useful for vSAN environments, their implementation may actually cause significant issues in a PowerFlex environment, so use of these options is not supported.

PowerFlex provides integrated capabilities to limit network bandwidth and I/O operations per second (IOPS) limits for each volume for each SDC. For more information, see Configure and Customize Dell PowerFlex.
