Deduplication and Single Instance Storage support

The Avamar Plug-in for the Windows File System supports backup and restore of both optimized and unoptimized files on Windows deduplicated volumes on Microsoft Windows Server 2019, 2016, or 2012. You can select whether to back up optimized files in either an optimized or unoptimized state. If you back up files in an optimized state, then you can restore the files in either an optimized or unoptimized state. You must select the entire Windows deduplicated volume for backup. However, you can restore individual folders and files from the volume backup. You can only restore files from a Windows deduplicated volume to the original location or to another Windows Server 2019, 2016, or 2012 computer with Windows deduplicated volumes.

Do not perform a System State backup of Windows deduplicated volumes if the volumes are critical volumes. Microsoft does not recommend making a deduplicated volume a critical volume, and Avamar excludes deduplicated volumes from VSS backups.

The Avamar Plug-in for the Windows File System also supports Single Instance Storage (SIS) volumes on Windows Storage Server 2008 and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. Similar to Windows deduplicated volumes, you must select the entire SIS volume for backup. However, you can restore individual folders and files from the volume backup.
