Recover virtual machines from cloud copy directly to vCenter

Use PowerProtect Data Manager UI to restore virtual machines from copies stored in the cloud account directly vCenter. Restore operations is done one virtual machine at a time. Users must manually select the target vCenter.

Prerequisites

The recovery to vCenter option is available for all the vCenters with staging area configured, registered to Data Manager. Users can restore the virtual machines that are protected by the same Data Manager account. If there are no vCenters registered with staging area configured, the Restore function is not available. See PowerProtect Data Manager Administration and User Guide for information about adding a vCenter asset source. Use CDRS UI to recover the vCenters that are not registered to current Data Manager.

Steps

  1. Select Restore > Assets.
    The Restore page is displayed.
  2. In the Virtual Machines tab, select the checkbox next to the virtual machines that you want to restore and then click View Copies.
    If the selected virtual machine has copies in the cloud, the CDR icon is displayed.
    The asset map for the selected virtual machine and the Copy Locations pane are displayed. The Copy Locations pane displays the location where you store the backups.
  3. Click the CDR icon.
    The list of backup copies is displayed on the right pane.
  4. Select the checkbox next to the backup copy that must be restored, and then click Restore button on the top.
    The status of the backup copy must be Available for the restore operation.
    The Create and Restore to New VM wizard is displayed.
  5. In the Restore VM page, select the target vCenter from the drop-down list, and then click Restore.
    If the source virtual machine vCenter is available with staging area configured, the Cloud DR selects this vCenter as the default target vCenter for restore.
  6. Optionally, turn on the Keep source VM MAC address and UID switch to retain the source VM MAC address and UID.
    This option is disabled by default.
    CAUTION Do not enable this toggle if source VM is still available on the target vCenter as this causes restore operation failure.
  7. Click Restore.
    An informational dialog box is displayed confirming that the restore operation has started successfully.
  8. Click OK to close the dialog box or do one of the following to view the status of the restore operation:
    1. Click Go to Jobs to monitor the status from the Jobs page.
    2. Click Go to Running Sessions to monitor the status from the Cloud DR tab in the Running Sessions page.
