Installing the system board

Prerequisites

If you are replacing a component, remove the existing component before performing the installation process.

About this task

NOTE:When installing this component, see the tech sheet that is bundled with the service kit. This is only applicable for computers with the following Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) configurations that have Element 31 grease is applied to the CPU or GPU.

  1. Display cable
  2. I/O-board cable
  3. Right fan cable
  4. Keyboard-controller board cable
  5. Speaker cable
  6. Power-button cable
  7. Left fan cable
  8. Headset port cable

Steps

  1. Turn the system board over.
  2. Align and place the right USB Type-C bracket on the system board.
  3. Align the screw hole on the left USB Type-C bracket with the screw hole on the system board.
  4. Replace the screw (M2x4) that secures the USB Type-C bracket to the system board.
  5. Install the fan and heat-sink assembly.
  6. Turn the system-board assembly over and place the system-board assembly on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
    NOTE:When installing the system-board assembly, align the system-board assembly to the positioning pins on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly and the extensions of the heat sink to the top edge of the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
  7. Align the screw holes on the system-board assembly with the screw holes on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
  8. Replace the nine screws (M2x4) that secure the system-board assembly to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
  9. Slide the headset port cable into the connector on the system board and close the latch to secure the cable and route it through the routing guides on the fan and heat-sink assembly.
  10. Adhere the tape that secures the headset port cable to the system board.
  11. Connect the left-fan cable to the system board.
  12. Slide the power-button cable into the connector on the system board and close the latch to secure the cable.
  13. Connect the speaker cable to the system board.
  14. Slide the keyboard-controller board cable into the connector on the system board and close the latch to secure the cable.
  15. Connect the right fan cable to the system board.
  16. Slide the I/O-board cable into the connector on the system board and close the latch to secure the cable.
  17. Adhere the Mylar that secures the I/O-board cable to the system board.
  18. Slide the display cable into the connector on the system board.
  19. Align the screw hole on the display-cable bracket with the screw hole on the system board.
  20. Replace the two screws (M1.6x1.8) that secures the display-cable bracket to the system board.

Next steps

  1. Install the rear I/O-cover.
  2. Install the M.2 2230 solid-state drive or M.2 2280 solid-state drive, as applicable.
  3. Install the wireless card.
  4. Install the battery.
  5. Install the base cover.
  6. Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer.
