Installing the system board

Prerequisites

CAUTION:The information in this installation section is intended for authorized service technicians only.

If you are replacing a component, remove the existing component before performing the installation procedure.

About this task

NOTE:When you remove the system board to replace or access other parts, the system board can be removed and installed with the heat sink attached. The removal and installation procedure is simplified to preserve the thermal bond between the system board and heat sink.

  1. Fingerprint-reader cable connector (FP1)
  2. Fan-cable connector (FAN1)
  3. display-cable connector (LCD1)
  4. Solid state drive slot (SSD1)
  5. Battery-cable connector (BATT1)
  6. Touchpad-cable connector (TPAD1)
  7. Coin-cell battery connector (RTC1)
  8. Universal Security Hub (USH) cable connector (CN661)
  9. WLAN-card connector (WLAN1)
  10. Speaker-cable connector (SPK1)
  11. WWAN 5G/4G-card connector (WWAN1)

Steps

  1. Align the screw holes on the system board with the screw holes on the palm-rest assembly.
  2. Replace the four screws (M2x3) to secure the system board to the palm-rest assembly.
  3. Replace the screw (M2x4) to secure the system board to the palm-rest assembly.
  4. Connect the fingerprint-reader cable to the connector (FP1) on the system board.
  5. Connect the display cable to the connector (LCD1) on the system board.
  6. Adhere the tape to cover the display cable.
  7. Connect the touchpad cable to the connector (TPAD1) on the system board and close the latch.
  8. Connect the USH board cable to the connector (CN661) on the system board and close the latch.
  9. Connect the speaker cable to the connector (SPK1) on the system board and adhere the tape to secure the speaker cable.
  10. Align the screw hole on the fingerprint-reader bracket to the screw hole on the system board.
    NOTE:Computers with non-fingerprint reader configuration do not have a fingerprint reader bracket.
  11. Replace the screw (M2x3) to secure the fingerprint-reader bracket to the system board.
  12. Align the screw hole on the display bracket with the screw hole on the system board.
  13. Replace the screw (M2x4) to secure the display bracket to the system board.
  14. Align the screw holes on the USB Type-C bracket to the screw holes on the system board.
  15. Replace the three screws (M2x5) to secure the USB Type-C bracket to the system board.

Next steps

  1. Install the heat sink.
  2. Install the fan.
  3. Install the wireless card.
  4. Install the WWAN 4G card or WWAN 5G card, whichever is applicable.
  5. Install the M.2 2230 solid state drive.
  6. Install the battery.
  7. Install the base cover.
  8. Install the SIM card tray (for computers with nano-SIM card option).
  9. Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer.
