Removing the system board

Prerequisites

CAUTION:The information in this removal section is intended for authorized service technicians only.
  1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
  2. Remove the SIM card tray (for computers with nano-SIM card option).
  3. Remove the base cover.
  4. Remove the battery.
  5. Remove the M.2 2230 solid state drive.
  6. Remove the wireless card.
  7. Remove the WWAN 4G card or WWAN 5G card, whichever is applicable.
  8. Remove the fan.
  9. Remove the heat sink.

About this task

NOTE:When you remove the system board to replace or access other parts, the system board can be removed and installed with the heat sink attached. The removal and installation procedure is simplified to preserve the thermal bond between the system board and heat sink.

Steps

  1. Remove the screw (M2x3) that secures the fingerprint-reader bracket.
    NOTE:Computers with non-fingerprint reader configuration do not have a fingerprint-reader bracket.
  2. Remove the fingerprint-reader bracket from the computer.
  3. Remove the screw (M2x4) that secures the display bracket to the system board and remove the bracket.
  4. Remove the three screws (M2x5) that secure the USB Type-C bracket to the system board and remove the bracket.
  5. Disconnect the fingerprint-reader cable from the connector (FP1) on the system board.
  6. Peel the conductive tape that is covering the display cable.
  7. Disconnect the display cable from the connector (LCD1) on the system board.
  8. Open the latch and disconnect the touchpad cable from the connector (TPAD1) on the system board.
  9. Open the latch and disconnect the USH cable from the connector (CN661) on the system board.
  10. Disconnect the speaker cable from the connector (SPK1) on the system board. Peel off the tape that secures the speaker cable to the system board.
  11. Remove the screw (M2x4) that secures the system board to the palm-rest assembly.
  12. Remove the four screws (M2x3) that secure the system board to the palm-rest assembly.
  13. Lift the system board at an angle to release it from the port and remove it off the palm-rest assembly.
